Term 1 novel study.

Term 1 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel Dragon keeper by Carol Wilkinson.

I found that this novel was really gripping as it had quite a lot of cliff hangers and it was a book that you at a time just don't want to finish as it is really good and has a lot of proverbs like all answers all answers lie beyond the gate of experience.

During the novel I had to complete two major assessment tasks. The first is an Explain Map which shows the consequences of a major event in the book. The second was a Describe++ Map (Inference map) which shows I how I have connected prior knowledge and other experiences to what I have been reading to make an inference.

National Standard this covers
  • Year 9/10 Standard
    • I can monitor my understanding as it develops during my reading, and adjust my strategies to address any comprehension problems Eg: If I don’t understand a passage I have read I can re-read it, read-on, use pictures or diagrams, or explore the meaning of some of the vocabulary.
    • I can use strategies to analyse ideas and information and to reflect critically on the meaning I am gaining from my reading. (Eg: I can think about the meaning of the information and ideas and how this fits with what I think)

Reading,grammatical constructions

I can recognize and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

In this unit I have been learning about:
  • The parts of speech.
  • The types of nouns.
  • The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging… Trying to remember the different descriptions/meaning for each of the nouns e.g pronouns, pronoun etc.

Something new I learnt was... what a conjunction is,it ties a word e.g and,but,or,so.
I know now what it is.

describing adverbial clauses blog post.

I can apply my knowledge of adverbial clauses and connectives to see how ideas are linked in texts.Screen Shot 2014-10-09 at 11.04.56 am.png

For reading I have been learning about adverbial clauses. I have found this learning interesting and helpful at the same time because I can use adverbial clauses in my writing to make more sense. And interesting because I never knew what it was or what it's purpose was.

In this activity adverbial clauses activity I had to... identify the adverbial clause in each sentence and then compare my answers with the correct answers that were on a different page overall I got all of them correct.

I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

For my “Evaluating Leaders” research I have been researching about…barack obama and sir Edmund Hillary.

During this unit I have had to use a range of strategies to find the information I needed on
Goggle. This include:
List strategies you used here common sense/type what I want specifically/ read carefully.

I have achieved this goal because… From my other experiences with SML working independently helps me get my work done faster.
My next step is to set a new reading goal.
